Welcome to this weeks Strategy session, today we will be focusing with some hot subjects… Mainly one very hot Underworlder by the name of Magmon. Notoriously known in the demo decks for achieving amazing damage with a simple emberswarm because of his fire: 5 (the only released creature at the time with that ability). Not to mention having a location suited perfectly for him buffing his already amazing fire attacks, today we will be taking this basic idea and taking it to its true potential.
Note that this is in regard to 1v1 master rules
Cards used:
Magmon (preferably with at least 60 power)
Whepcrack
Lavapond x2
song of fury
Good cards to include:
Flame orb
fire attacks (emberswarm etc.)
Underworld collusseum
underworld city
The strategy:
Ideally it is best that you have the location choice (and hopefully draw a Lavapond) otherwise this strategy’s strength is literally cut in half. Ways to get past this is to equip your Magmon with a vlaric shard, than use a myrthquake (which switches the location to the next one on your location deck) or use a flux bauble.
For this scenario we will assume that your battling in the Lavapond. Here Magmon gains fire 10 from this location, along with his battlegear which gives him 15 power and another fire 5. Usually I wouldn’t be saying this.. but as soon as the match starts activate your Mugic the Song of fury (dealing 10 damage to your opponent and giving youself fire 5). This equals to an early 10 damage, and a grand total of fire: 25! by using attacks such as Flame orb (for up to 45 damage) or emberswarm (for 35) you can deal amazing amounts of damage. Unlike a super strong card like Allmegddon which can only be used once in a battle, Magmon takes advantage of any attack with the fire element (quite alot, you can most likely build a deck of almost just fire cards). This allows you to deal 30 damage + every turn!
Pros:
Constant, high damage dealing attacks
Simple to pull off
Not so easily countered
Cons:
Uses alot of rare cards
won’t work quite so well without the perfect location
Suggestions:
Even if you don’t draw a Lavaponds, its always nice to include other location choices that greatly bloster your attacking ability, cards such as Underworld Colosseum or Underworld City boost your damage output, though not as much as the Lavapond it does provide alot of positive situations. An Aqua shield or stonemail could also be considered, as magmon has Recklessness can could easily end up K.O.ing himself if the match drags on.
Rating: 8/10
This strategy is fairly balanced, though it uses a lot of rare cards it is very flexible (you can sub a Viledriver if you don’t have a whepcrack, or a canon of causality if you don’t have a song of fury). It does a consistent amount of damage as opposed to burstable damage (as with hepptadd or other cards that rely on the attacks as opposed to Magmon who relays on his fire:25). The only true downside to this is that you must tailor an attack deck and a location deck just for Magmon, so his uses somewhat decrease in larger armies, especially if you plan to multi-tribe (as the fire element is usually inherent of the UW tribe).
