Flamekin here,
In my last post, I promised I would pot this within the week, and even though it is cutting it close, I always make good with my promises. Anyways, I really wanted to do this topic, and I think you guys will enjoy it as much as I did writing it, so here it is, The 7 Things I Hate About The Chaotic TV Show.
I want to start off with the thing I was most disappointed with when the show started airing. One of the main things that interested me when I heard about Chaotic was that all the art was done by Canadian artists. That may not be the selling point the company was aiming for, but that type of thing appeals to me. You know, in an industry where most work is outsourced, I take a bit of pride in knowing that some of the people behind the next big thing in gaming are Canadians. Maple Leaf moment aside, when I turned on the TV to watch the first episode of Chaotic, I was not only shocked but disappointed to see it was done in flash animation. I respect flash animation, because I know how hard it is, but I cant help but feel a bit cheated, because I think this could be a great in for some really good artists. I am however, overwhelmingly happy that this will be remedied in season two, even though Tom’s new haircut is dumb, which reminds me about another few things I hate about this show.
I’ve seen almost every episode of Chaotic, and I just have one question, who’s the main character? You would think it was Tom, but I’m not sure anymore because I almost never see him battling. I’ll sum up the last week of episodes on my local channel. Kaz vs. Herculeon. Kaz vs. Klay. Kaz vs. Hotshot. Kaz and Grook. Kaz and Chaor. Kaz and Borth-Majar. Kaz, Kaz, Kaz!!!!!!!!!! What the hell? For being the main character, Tom sure doesn’t do much. Out of the 40 episodes so far, I think about 15-19 of them are mainly about Kaz. When I watch Chaotic, I don’t care about Kaz, I want to see Tom, the supposed main character of the show. In Hulk, who wanted to see Betty Ross fight Abomination. The answer’s nobody. You know, if you consider that Kaz is the main character, things start to make a lot more sense. It pretty much explains why in the game Underworlders were the top tier army for the first two sets of the game, a point which is up for debate. What’s up with this writing. I mean it should at least be clear who the protagonist is. Even in Harry Potter at least it’s bloody obvious, and for you readers, if I am ever making a Harry Potter reference, you should know I am pissed.
Speaking of the writing, there’s a few things that make my blood boil when I think about it. First there’s the story arcs, any form of story has a plot, which usually manifests in television as a story arc. Think about the main story arc in this season, Tom loses Maxxor. That annoys me on so many levels. First, Maxxor’s the poster boy for the series, and to take him away so early on is just pointless. Even if you were to give it back, taking it away in episode 10 means very little, because we haven’t seen too many battles with him yet, and Tom’s reliance and bond with the card isn’t too deep yet. If they had saved that for season 3 or 4, that would have been a great arc, but doing it right away is a bit shallow. Second, two better plot points were blended into it, namely the Overworld/Underworld war, as well as the Underworld Civil War. Because they did that, they made those points stale, and frankly, less important for when they bring them up again. I have a question. Why is it that it never occured to Tom to just buy another Maxxor card on earth? That’s how he got the first one. Why is it that instead of just walking to a Hobby shop, spending 50 bucks and start playing again, Tom thought it would be a better idea to mope for a month, then trek through Perim for god knows how long all to find a scan of him. That’s just stupid.
Speaking of plot points, why is it none of them are being adressed? Why is it the wars between tribes and rulers are so being underplayed? Why is it that after episode 6, the Cothica isn’t ever mentioned again? Why is it that nobody cares about Prexxor Chasm anymore? So am I to believe that at the end of Chasm Quest, Tom says “I’m going to help Smildion”, then just forgets and decides to move on to the next pointless episode? Even the first season of Yu-gi-oh followed a plot arc. Yu-gi-oh for god sakes. I can give it some leeway because it’s the first season, but I feel the season was so empty, I just have to rant.
Anyways, its getting late, and I have work in the morning, so for now I’m going to leave you with the first four of my points. I hope you enjoyed them, and feel free and obligated to comment. Send me a challenge or PM.
Flamekin Out.
I agree with most of your reasons,
There are no good follow ups from the episodes, its all mixed somehow, so it makes it hard to watch. At several points I felt like I missed an episode for the same reason.
Cheers, Savage
Great article. I myself am a cartoon addict, and the show made me wanna try the cards. But as you said, i see no clear follow ups. I must have seen every show that ever was on TV, and yet, I have no way to tell you in which order they should be. The very first episode is easy to define, but for the rest…I have no clue if i’ve seen season 2, maybe i have, I simply don’t know. What season is it when Tom cheats against Kaz? And like you said, why make the show so much about Kaz? I mean, either get 1 main character, or split it evenly between the 4 of them. Sometimes i wonder if they don’t make a show, air it, then decide on what to talk about in the next one. Chaotic guys : draw the whole season, with a nice plot to it, then air it, and then start talking about the next season. Not show after show, because so far, that’s what it looks like.
BTW, having Tom walk in a Hobby Shop and buy a new Maxxor would make a hell of a boring plot. LOL…Episode 11 : The Hobby Shop : Synopsis : Tom lost his Maxxor card, but never fear. The Comic Book Guy is there to help him out by selling him one! Watch Tom as he reaches for his wallet! Feel the goosebumps once Tom scans the code up in his Pad! You’ll get shivers down your spine when you see Tom take a cab to the shop! The driver doesn’t speak english! DOESN’T SPEAK ENGLISH!!!…LOL this would be a hell of a show :P
True, but I had so many problems with how they handled that plot arc.
and after he battled crelin and learned that “its not the cards, its the player” he later mopes again and almost quits chaotic. why not have him go to maxxor’s castle in kiru city and have the gaurds tell maxxor a boy named tom is here. this way we could learn more about their plans, other major overworld leaders, heroes, and other characters, and see more of the location as well.
yeah, we see chaor in actiion alot, but not maxxor
Very good article.I also think the game isn’t that good too because it has very bad names(ex.hearing, growling, qwun)and the game is just like pokemon/yugioh.”Sacrificing”?”Creatures was already used by MAGI-NATION and Magic the gathering.
well there are some basic things about a card game that all games should have. Sacrificing creatures is one of them and you try coming up with a hundred or so names for a bunch of creatures that havent been used yet and dont sound like a name in another card game. not that easy is it?
POSSIBLY NEW CREATURES AND LOCATINS bATTLEGEAR EXC. WITH SEASON 2
I like that Chaotic doesn’t have a Main caracter im probably one of the Many few who do but look at it this Ash from Pokemon has all the Good Pokemon Charizard, Snorlax, Tauros and yugi on yu gi oh had all the good cards and instantly you know there going to win before the match or Duel even begins. on you gi oh you must have a certain amount of cards or your a nobody, Chaotic is all about th Player’s strenth i mean Tom Beat Tangeth Toborn with Bodal perfect example right there, as for the names H’earing Xheild and Qwune at least i can pronounce them if i had to make a change i’d like to see more peyton amd Sarah battels
Sometimes there are more then just one protagonist. Plus the protagonist of a show is acually not just one super hero, but instead its acually just the good guys. But what you say does make sence.
